Deborah was born July 27, 1952 to Leonard and Elizabeth Carr in Marshall, Missouri, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1970, she graduated from O’Hara High School and began studying modern dance at Stephens College. Upon her graduation from Stephens College in 1973, she moved to New York City and danced with the Charles Weidman Dance Company. Deborah formed her own dance company in 1976, the Deborah Carr Theatre Dance Ensemble, and performed across the country, including featured performances in the American Dance Festival. A gifted dancer and choreographer, Deborah taught workshops and master classes to dance companies and universities across the United States and Europe. In 2003, she joined Stephens College as a full time faculty member in their dance department until her retirement in 2016.
Deborah was widely known as a gifted dancer, instructor, and choreographer. She genuinely enjoyed teaching her students and watching them grow as individuals and performers. Her friendship, sense of humor, and artistic talent will be greatly missed.
Deborah will be laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery next to her parents, Leonard and Elizabeth. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Deborah is survived by her brother, David (Terri) Carr; nieces Christina Carr (Tim Smyth), Stephanie (Brian) Korth, and Erica (Adam) Pruess; cousins Doug (Joan) Maser, Mark (Ann) Maser, Drew Maser, and Paulette Krisher; her dog Rosie; great niece and nephews; numerous friends, colleagues, and students.
