Dennis Charles Osburn was born on January 21, 1952 to Charles “Ossie” Calvin Osburn and Norma Jean Gross Osburn at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He received his education from Visitation Catholic Elementary School and Southwest High School where he graduated in 1970. While in elementary school, he received a set of drums from his grandfather, Sam, and was hooked on music. Music was his life’s passion! During his school years he made many life-long friends and developed his musical skills. Many nights during his elementary years, he, his childhood best friend, Tim Williams, and his middle sister, Carolyn, would sing and play music in the Osburn family living room, only taking a break to drive through The Plaza, making a stop at Sydney’s Drive-In, then head back to the music. Denny was hilarious and so much fun to be around. Those days were always so special to him, and he reminisced about his childhood often.
Denny is preceded in death by his father, mother and his younger brother, Ken.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Pam; daughter, Paden; three sisters, Nancy, Carolyn and Peggy. Also survived by three aunts, an uncle, several cousins, nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends in the music world.
A self-taught musician and multi-instrumentalist, Denny was fluent with any stringed or keyed instrument. As a production engineer, you could count on Denny to add his musical flavor to any style of music. He was generous with his time and talent, and performed recording and video tasks with lightning speed. Woodworking and furniture design were also his strong skills.
Along with his friends, nationwide music and video industries also recognized his extraordinary talent. He was the recipient of many awards including: Omni awards: (3) Bronze, Silver and Gold- 1987 -1990, Mid-America Emmy Award: KCPT Documentary -1997. Telly Award Finalist: Osburn Video Sweetening – 1990
ITVA: Kansas City Golden Reel Award. Video Post – 1993 Spirit of Independence Award: New England Film and Video Festival -1992 – for “Barnacles Tell No Lies”.
Denny played in numerous bands in Kansas City, and nationwide tours including Leon Redbone in 1989. Denny was a shining star to all who knew him. There is no replacement. He will be missed by all.
