Doris was born January 12, 1927 in Litchfield, Illinois. She was the daughter of Fred J. and Bertha (Wilson) Carll. Doris moved to Kansas City after High School to train as an airline hostess and was hired by TWA. Doris and Harold V. Mayes met while roller skating and were married on September 16, 1950 in Litchfield, Illinois.
She was a member of the Baptist Church. Doris worked in the home until her children were old enough for her to get a part-time job at The Jones Store. She later worked at Lake City Munitions Plant and after a course in typing, as a secretary/receptionist. She retired from the Kansas City Hilton on the Plaza.
Doris and Harold enjoyed their retirement years as collectors and as active members of the Westmoreland Glass Society and the Heart of America Carnival Glass Society where they made many close friends. She loved to sew, crochet, knit, cross-stitch and tried her hand at many different crafts including quilting and decoupaging. She loved to read and passed that love to her daughters. She kept her mind active in her later years by reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and word searches.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Harold, and many dear family and friends. She is survived by daughters Laura Mayes Staehle and husband Ken of Prairie Village, Kansas; Susan Mayes of Kansas City, Missouri; cousin Jim Wilson of Alton, Illinois; nieces Trudy Barker, Jenny Grote and husband Wulf, Melissa Ryder, and Candy Lierly; and nephew Sam Carll and wife Beth.
