Dorothy was born May 20, 1919 near Florence, KS to William and Althea Ruby. She only weighed 2 ½ pounds at birth and miraculously lived to 103 years old. On April 11, 1935 she married Norton Hickman and together they had four children. Dorothy was a very strong, loving, supportive wife, mother and grandmother. She and Norton moved to Raytown in 1945 and lived there for 69 years until she moved to Tulsa in 2015 for health reasons. While in Raytown, she owned Hickman Tow Service and The Tiny Grill with her husband. Later she worked at The Style House and other retail shops and was a very dedicated worker.
Her family was her life and she loved everyone dearly. She was very proud of her large family and loved to cook for family dinners, spend time with them and go to any and all events. Grandma/Mom enjoyed both having you over for dinner for no reason and large family gatherings. She was an exceptional cook/baker. On your birthday, you could find her in the kitchen making your favorite cake or pie full of butter and love. Her hobbies were cooking, spending time in her large garden of beautiful flowers/plants, traveling, going out to dinner and spending time with her family. When you went Grandma/Mom’s house you could always count on the kitchen door to be open, her AM radio to be playing, wonderful smells from the oven, yummy treats on the dining room table, candy in a dish and her busily working around her home. Even in her 90’s she would go up and down her spiral staircase, wash down the outside of her home, clean out her bird bath, hang her laundry outside to dry and watch over her neighborhood. We will always carry your memory in our hearts. We love you and we will miss you.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Darlene Ryan, son Terry Hickman (Donna), son Norton Hickman Jr (Patty) and daughter-in-law Carol Hickman, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. She was preceded in death by husband Norton Hickman Sr, son Larry Hickman, son-in-law Pat Ryan, grandson Norton Hickman III and her beloved sister Bea Stepanik.
Visitation will be at 9:00 AM with services to follow at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, KCMO 64133. Her burial will immediately follow at the same location.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Uncle Terry and Aunt Donna for their compassion, care and dedication to Grandma in her final years of life. Your support helped extend her life beyond 100 years and for that, we all say God Bless You and Thank You!
