Hazel Irene Deckman, age 95, of Waconia, Minnesota passed away May 6, 2022. She was born May 26. 1926 in Amsterdam, Missouri, the daughter of Marshall and Artie (Campbell) Lawrence. Upon turning 19 she began working at Russell Stover Candies in Kansas City dipping chocolates. She could tell who had dipped a particular type by the swirl the fellow employee made on top.
On October 2, 1945 she married Elmer Deckman. They began building their new home in 1949 in South Kansas City, Missouri. She canned vegetables and was an active member in PTA and Cub/Boy Scouts Troop 62. She was a longtime member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. She was baptized on December 28, 2006.
She enjoyed sewing, crochet and playing cards. Later she would travel, quilt with her friends at church and do puzzles. She had a unique quality of making others feel special with a nonjudgmental spirit. She was a gifted listener all her life. She loved sewing for her grandkids whom she dearly loved. Her pies were exceptional, especially her peach cobbler, as was the case at the Deckman picnics. Also, one of her special personal accomplishments was to obtain her GED at age 60. She most recently lived in Waconia, Minnesota at Good Samaritan Society.
Her parents, brothers Glen and Jim, and her granddaughter Caitlin Wade preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Gayle (Rex) Guthland of Waconia, Minnesota and a son, Gary (Nancy) Deckman of Overland Park, Kansas; 4 grand-children: Melia Cerrato (Audie), Micah Guthland, Kyle (Melissa) Deckman and Olga Deckman; 4 great-grandchildren: Yassin Cerrato, Drew Deckman, Elise Maria and Emily Jean.
A Visitation for Hazel will be held Monday, May 16, 2022 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00am. Burial will follow in Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
