

Irene Rose Cairns, 91, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on April 18 2012 at Liberty Terrace Care Center in Liberty, Missouri. Visitation from 9-10am on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St., Kansas City, Missouri. The service of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday beginning at 10am. She will be buried in Forest Hill Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Irene Rose Mohrman was born on December 31, 1920 in St. Benedict, Kansas to Joseph and Rose Mary Rennenger Mohrman. After graduating as valedictorian of her class from St. Benedict High School, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she pursued a career as a secretary. She married William J. Cairns of Patterson, New Jersey on September 4, 1948 at St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict. The couple lived in Patterson for four years before moving back to Kansas City with two of their children. Irene was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Parish. She participated in the Altar Society, and was active as a communion minister to home bound parishioners. For a number of years she hosted a prayer group in her home. She was employed by Holy Cross School as the school secretary for ten years and worked as a volunteer in the library after retiring. Mrs. Cairns was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Kharas, her sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Leo Schmelzle. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Cairns of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her three sons and their spouses, James & Diane Cairns of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Tom & Kathy Cairns of Laporte, Colorado and David & Ellen Cairns of Kansas City, Missouri. She leaves six grandchildren, Melanie Cairns, Brian Cairns, Colin Cairns, Mark Kharas, Megan Cairns and Delaney Cairns; three great grandchildren, Julian Cairns, Freya and Rhys Marcinczyk. She leaves one sister and brother-in-law, Isabel & Frank Schmelzle of Kansas City, Missouri as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
