Jim’s journey began on July 6, 1942, born in Independence, as the third son of Gladys and Ernest Gracheck, joining his older brothers Jack and Bill. His brother Steve was born seven years later. Jim attended St. Mary’s grade and high school in Independence, MO. He worked at Allis Chalmers welding combines, saving money for college. He received his BS in Pharmacy from UMKC shortly after being accepted to medical school and worked at St. Luke’s as a pharmacist before attending KCUMB, studying osteopathic medicine. He graduated in 1971.
Jim’s first practice was in Belton MO. As his practice grew, he moved to Loma Vista in Raytown where he and his dedicated staff (Tommye, Wanda, Sheila, and Lisa) worked together for 20 years along with his wife Joni who managed the business. Wanting a smaller practice, Jim decided to downsize and partnered with Dr. Ray Vasquez and his wife Kim in the Lee’s Summit area for 23 years. Jim had a passion for his work and a love for the patients that he served. He eventually cut back his appointments to two days a week, joining with Kathleen Stegman-Smith, and kept working until the onset of his illness. It was a pleasure for the family to see so many of his patients come to with him well on his 83rd birthday.
“Doc,” as he was affectionately called, was well-known and adored for the tenderhearted, gentle care he gave to his patients for 51 years.
Jim lived life to the greatest degree and approached every day as an opportunity for discovery and joy. He and his wife Joni traveled to many states, took a long cruise, and visited Mexico twice to scuba dive. Their favorite trip was their 25th anniversary in Vancouver, Canada.
In his home life, Jim loved to cook (his “parmesan bread” is what many remember him for) and to try new cuisine, though chicken spiedini remained one of his all-time favorites. He loved to stroll around the neighborhood with his beloved dogs, take long walks in Tomahawk Creek Park, and play golf - no one ever told him he was terrible!
Jim had a presence that would fill the room, which reflected his beauty, gentleness, and peace.
He is survived by his wife Joni, son James Aaron (Melanie), daughter Tammy (Jamie), stepdaughter Devon (James), stepdaughter Megan (Chris), as well as his brothers Bill (Theresa) and Steve.
A celebration of Jim’s life is being planned to take place in September, and more details will be updated on this page soon.
