March 18, 1939 - July 1, 2021
James Henry McComas, age 82, of Independence, Missouri passed away July 1, 2021.
Jim was born on March 18, 1939 to James and Martha (Beach) McComas in Hardin, Missouri;
where many of you know him simply as “Jimmie.” He served in the United States Air Force and
then worked his entire life at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Jim started at Lake City using a
sickle to cut grass and through his own dedication and perseverance worked his way up to be
Manager of Explosives. Jim garnered the respect of his peers and those he was ultimately
responsible over. His expertise in explosives and ammunition production took him as far away
as Australia where he was instrumental in development of airbag explosive technology. He was
called on by his former employer on many occasions to travel throughout the contiguous states
to lend his production knowledge.
Jim was, without doubt, the most selfless, caring and loving husband, dad, and grandpa.
He spent his retirement enjoying his many grandkids as well as continuing to work as an
explosives expert consultant, and cursing the golf course. The imprint he has made on his
family’s hearts will live on forever. Jim had the ability to tell, and sometimes re-tell, a story like
non-other. His “Hardin’isms” and humor are a legacy his family will carry on and cherish until
the end of time.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his sister, his daughter, and his infant
grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jorlene McComas; Daughters: Carrie (Doug) Morgan and
Jamie (Richard) McComas; Grandchildren: Brooke (Keith) Beckman, Dane (Madie) Plymell,
McKenzie (Jacob) Heimsoth, Easton McComas, Ireland McComas, Eisley McComas, London
McComas, Deacon McComas and Lochlan McComas; Great-Grandkids: Gentry Plymell, Marley
Plymell, Henley Beckman, Dax Plymell and Judson Beckman. And his beloved labrador
retriever Jack “Top Gun” McComas.
Jim was as proud an Irishman as he was an American.
A visitation will be held from 10-11 AM, with graveside service at 11AM, on Friday, July 16, at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. The family has asked that all who wish to attend to please wear a mask.
“May those who love us, love us;
And those who don’t love us,
may God turn their hearts;
and if He doesn’t turn their hearts,
may he turn their ankles,
so we’ll know them by their limping.”
Is breá linn tú go deo daidí, seanathair agus cara.
