

He was born on March 15, 1936, in Independence, MO. Growing up, Jim was active in Boy Scouts, and he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was also honored as a member of the tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as assistant Scout Master, and he traveled to Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Jim also enjoyed playing baseball, fishing, hunting, and camping.
Jim graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1953. Post high school, he attended the University of Central Missouri, and graduated in 1958, with a degree in business. At UCM he was President of the Merchandising and Retail Club, and he played varsity baseball. Jim was also an active member and alumni of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (TKE).
Jim had a thirty year career at Montgomery Ward and Company (KC catalog and distribution center) in management. His last ten years at Wards, he was Manager of the Industrial Engineering Department. After his career at Montgomery Ward, Jim founded and owned his own business, Blinds and Shades, for twenty years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Mildred Turrentine (Atkinson); his brother, Teddy Turrentine, and great granddaughters, Berkeley and Jozie Alphin.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Janet Turrentine; his daughters, Kathe Redel (Wendell) and Karen Marlborough ( Matt); his four grandchildren, Jacob Redel (Emily), Megan Alphin (Anthony), Jenna Catapano (Mike), and Morgan Oghenejobo (Ovie); and eleven great grandchildren.
Jim enjoyed many sports throughout his life, but golf became his favorite. In earlier years, he was President of the Men’s Golf Association at Stayton Meadows (Royal Meadows) Golf Course, and in later years, he enjoyed playing golf at the Unity Village Golf Course. He was also an avid KC Chiefs and Royals fan but his family was always the center of his world. Jim will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend.
The family would like to thank Luminos Hospice, Pastor Andy Campbell, Leonna Parker, and Kimmi Beauchamp for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in his final days. Each of you are angels in your own special way, and you have touched our hearts forever.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Visitation and Memorial Service at Mt. Moriah Newcomer & Freeman Memorial Home on Monday, August 4, 2025. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00. A Memorial Service will follow visitation at 11:00. Inurnment will immediately follow the service at 12:00 for those wishing to participate. Please join our family for Jim’s “Celebration of Life” party at the Winterset Clubhouse, 2505 SW Wintercreek Dr., Lee’s Summit, MO at 1:00.
