On August 22, 2020, following a very brief but fierce and stoic battle with cancer, Jean Ann Horner passed away at her daughter's home in Mission, Kansas, surrounded by her loving family. She was 67 years old. In the words of one of her favorite artists (Rod Stewart) in our hearts, she will remain forever young.
There are no words to adequately capture Jean Horner, her incredible life, or the way in which she impacted everyone she met with her boisterous laugh and quick wit. A genuinely selfless person who did anything and everything for her friends and family, you’ve likely never met anyone as authentic, hard working, or loving as Jean. A purveyor of fine foods and a fried chicken connoisseur, Jean was wise, full of wit, grit, and above all else, love.
Ambitious, self starting, and practical, Jean never met a problem she couldn't solve or a project she couldn't tackle - particularly those tasks typically reserved for men. Whether it was tiling a floor or snaking a toilet, Jean just figured it out, even if that meant several trips to the hardware store or pouring over poorly written instruction manuals. It is this independent, self-starter attitude that Jean instilled in her two daughters and she took great pride in watching them succeed in academics and in their respective careers.
Jean's hobbies over the years were as unique as her sweet soul. In her free time, you could find Jean spending time with her grandchildren, spinning yarn and knitting beautiful pieces, or curating a charcuterie board for a party. She was a true talent of any craft she encountered. Jean was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed rooting for the Royals, Chiefs, and Jayhawks. Over the years, Jean took on many challenges including completing the MS 150 mile bike ride more than once!
Jean worked tirelessly throughout her life supporting her family, but no job was as enjoyable or as rewarding as caring for her three grandchildren. Jean rarely took time for herself if it meant she could be spending time with Addie, Hudson, and Teddy, and she had an incredible gift of making each grandchild feel special and loved. She loved sharing her special talents with her grandchildren and relished in teaching them all that she could. When it came time to retire in 2019, Jean decided to take on a new challenge and spent her days taking care of her infant grandson so that her daughter could remain focused on her career. Her love for her children and grandchildren, coupled with the sacrifices she made for them, was unparalleled.
Those who were lucky enough to have known Jean take comfort in the lasting memories of an irreplaceable mother, grandmother and best friend who hosted the most amazing Christmas Eve parties and could fix anything. She will be greatly missed.
Jean is survived by her two daughters, Allyson Rose Hild (Ryan) and Samantha Jane Monsees (Matthew), her three grandchildren, Addison Rose Hild, Hudson William Hild and Theodore Harold Monsees, and her beloved dog Louie, all of whom loved and adored her immensely. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 10, 2020.
