Retired Brigadier General John Gerard Sullivan USAFR, resident of Leawood, KS died January 29, 2019. A native of Kansas City and a graduate of Rockhurst High School, he completed undergraduate studies at Rockhurst College; earned a Master’s degree at Auburn University and completed studies at United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College - Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.
After being commissioned in 1953 through the Aviation Cadet program, he earned double aeronautical ratings of Pilot and Navigator and accumulated over 11,000 flying hours in various heavy fixed wing aircraft.
His military career spanned 35 years and was primarily centered on Flight Operations Management and Command. His final assignment was Commander of the 433rd Military Airlift Wing at Kelly AFB, TX.
He and his spouse Mary (Jean), after numerous assignments and relocations, retired to the Kansas City area.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean (Blesener), daughters Ann Sullivan of Roseville CA and Jane Sullivan of Trinidad CA; sons Patrick of Colorado Springs, CO, and John of Keller, TX; and grandchildren Mary Katherine and Aidan.
Visitation is at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the Church of the Nativity, 3800 W. 119th Street, Leawood, KS followed at 11:00 AM with the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow immediately after Mass at the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.
