Joy Rollins, 73, Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Sunday January 30, 2011. She is the daughter of Mildred Bernice (Anderson) and William Thomas Kermit Crawford and was born December 22, 1937 in Ferrelview, Missouri. Growing up, Joy and her family loved horseback riding. She was a member of a trail club and often went on trail rides with friends and family. In high school Joy enjoyed athletics and excelled at basketball, continuing to play after graduation. After graduation she met Phillip Boydston whom she ultimately married. Out of that union two daughters were born, Cindy Jo and Phyllis Lea. Unfortunately, this marriage did not last and ended in divorce. In 1959, Joy was injured in a severe car accident which left her disabled. She underwent numerous surgeries as a result of her injuries, both immediately after the accident and for years thereafter. She persevered through these surgeries and the long periods of rehabilitation which inevitably followed. Her goal was always to be able to regain full use of her leg but unfortunately, she was never able to walk again without assistance. She married Tommy Ray Rollins in 1963. Tommy adopted both Cindy and Phyllis as his own and in 1969, the couple added a son, Trent, to the family. Together Joy and Tommy owned and operated the Rollins Funeral Home in Platte City, Missouri for many years while they raised their family. Following her husbands death in 1990, Joy worked as a secretary in the medical department of Truman Medical Center. Following her retirement from Truman, Joy learned the credit repair business and eventually started her own such business which she operated until just recently. Joy loved to cook and having learned at the apron of her mother, passed her expertise on to her daughters for which they were always grateful (as are their families). Joy will be remembered for her sense of humor, determination and commitment to others when they were in need. The untimely and premature loss of her daughter Phyllis, broke her heart. Her saving grace was being able to help raise and care for Phyllis’s son, Scott, who gave her a sense of comfort and purpose through a very difficult time. Joy is survived by her brother, Keith Crawford (Lois); her daughter, Cindy Goe (Steve, grandchildren, Courtney Beck (Michael: children, Amara and Michael, Jr.), Lindsay Underwood (Scott, child Hudson) and Jacob Goe, and her son, Trent Rollins, (grandchildren, Jessie, Spencer and Colby); grandchildren, Brandon Aubrey and Scott Swartz. On behalf of the family, we want to convey our appreciation for all of the prayers and sympathies extended to us. Thank you for remembering Joy and the words of compassion you have given us. And a very special expression of appreciation to Rodney Heinsohn and Mount Moriah funeral homes for their unbelievable efforts in memory of Joy and Tommy. Words can not begin to express the depths of our appreciation. A family visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home, 801 NW 108th Street, Kansas City, Missouri with a funeral service to be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Platte City Cemetery.
