We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Lawrence Joseph Reed, affectionately known as Larry, who left this world on August 2, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on January 20, 1950, in Kansas City, Kansas to Edward L. Reed and Yvonne E. Saperston. Larry lived a life rich with love, adventure, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward, and his brother, Jerris J. Reed.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca A. Reed, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage since their wedding on April 22, 1978. Together, they built a family that flourished under the warmth of his love and dedication.
Larry was a proud father to his three children: Meredith R. Reed, Michelle N. Harman (Tim), and Joseph C. Reed (Erin). He found immense joy and pride in his role as a grandfather to Katlyn, Benjamin, McKenzie, Madison, Ethan, Christian, Rocco and Ivy. To his grandchildren, he was not just a Papa but a mentor, a storyteller, and a source of unconditional love. His presence in their lives will be missed immensely.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Larry proudly served his country during the Vietnam conflict, stationed in Guam where he worked in communications. His commitment to service continued throughout his career, where he enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year tenure with the US Post Office, rising through the ranks from mail carrier to branch manager.
Outside of his professional life, Larry was a man of many passions. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed history, savoring cigars on the back porch, and the companionship of his beloved dog, Pippa. A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Larry was an enthusiastic supporter of the local sports teams, proudly cheering for the Royals, Chiefs, and Jayhawks. He found joy in the camaraderie of bowling and was dedicated to coaching his daughters' softball teams, imparting lessons of teamwork and resilience that would last a lifetime.
His character was defined by his devotion to family; he cherished each moment spent with his loved ones and made it a priority to create a legacy of love. He touched the lives of many and will be profoundly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember a man who was not only a devoted husband, father, and grandfather but also a friend, mentor, and community member who gave so much and asked for so little in return. Larry will forever remain in our hearts, and his spirit will continue to guide us, reminding us to cherish every moment, embrace our passions, and love unconditionally. Rest in peace, dear Larry. Your legacy will live on through your family and all those you inspired.
