Lillian was born on October 10, 1923, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Samuel and Lillian McCollom. She graduated from Center High School in Kansas City. After graduating, she met the love of her life through her brother Sam and was happily married to Eugene Walter for 65 years.
Lillian, affectionately known as Pilly, traveled with Gene all across the world as he worked for TWA. What she most loved was volunteering. She wore many hats, her longest as a Pink Lady at Shawnee Mission Hospital. She also volunteered for the Better Living Center for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Troost, where she held prayer with clients. She was so beloved there that one of her clients named her baby after her. She excelled at leading the Rhythm band at Holmeswood Nursing Home, introducing lively music to the elderly residents.
Lillian and Gene were founding members of New Haven Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she attended for nearly 75 years. She was very proud and active member in her church, especially in the church community and school, teaching and guiding other members.
Lillian was a dynamo, continually caring about the welfare of her friends and relatives. She cooked, cared, and cleaned for all her grandchildren and family alike. In her younger years, she loved roller-skating, and in her older age, she took joy in her walks. She loved her bingo games, even in her sleep, and had fun playing scrabble and solitaire online well into her 90s. She took pride in herself and everything she did, leaving behind a legacy of love and effort this world would have been worse without.
In her last five years of life, she enjoyed living at the Village in Prairie Village, Kansas, enjoying the friendship of residents and staff alike. A special thank you to Cory and Erika for their extraordinary love and attention to our mother.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Walter, and their infant son, David.
She is survived by her daughters, Dianne Pearson and Jennifer Nichols and husband Byron; her grandsons William Stuart and wife Christina and David Stuart and wife Kristine; and great-grandchildren, Timothy and wife Amber, Bethany and husband Davey, and Rachel and husband Julius; and great-great-granddaughter, Marie; and many nieces, nephews, other family members, and dear friends. She will be forever in our hearts.
Visitation will be held on September 12, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, located at 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131. The funeral service will follow from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the same location, with a reception from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
