

Lucinda Jane McCafferty, 87, died Saturday, September 30, 2017, surrounded by her family in Colorado Springs, CO. She was born in Stafford, Kansas and lived in the Kansas City area most of her life. Lou Jane graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City, MO, where she met her future husband Daniel I. Whitaker. Lou Jane and Dan were married on June 24, 1952, and lived happily until his death in 1964. She earned a BA in Education from the University of Missouri and a Masters degree from Emporia State University. Lou Jane was an elementary teacher in the Kansas City, MO and Shawnee Mission, KS, school districts for 30 years. She leaves the world a better place because she was important in the lives of so many children. She was a long-time member and Deacon of Leawood Baptist Church where she also taught Sunday School. In 2010 she moved to Colorado Springs to be closer to family. Lou Jane was a loving and gentle mom treasured by her family and friends. She is survived by her two sons, David R. Whitaker and his wife Denise of Colorado Springs, CO; Jonathan L. Whitaker and his wife Patrice of Benbrook, TX; sister, Karyl Burns of Overland Park, KS, and her children Karyl Lynn, Meri Kay, Debbie and Michael, and their families; five grandchildren: John, Patricia, Aaron, Leigh, and Brant; eleven great-grandchildren: Alex, Whitney, Kailey, Miranda, Daniel, Charlotte, Brynn, Paxton, Nathan, Grey, and Jenna; and one great-great-granddaughter Evelyn Claire. She is preceded in death by her husband, and parents Ross and Zta Unruh. Visitation will begin at 10 am, with memorial service at 10:30 am, Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Leawood Baptist Church.
