Lynn William Lyon, M.D., 73, of Mission Hills, Kansas, died 2/20/2015 of a sudden cardiac event. He is survived by his wife, Rebecca S. Johnson, MD, and his children, Seth William Lyon of Berkeley, California and Nancy Jorgensen (husband Mark) of McFarland, Wisconsin, grandchildren Nicholas, Anna, William, and Joshua Jorgensen and brothers Terry Lyon of Forest Hills, Illinois, and Kim Lyon of Beverly Hills, Michigan. He is predeceased by his brother Peter Lyon of Boulder, Colorado.
Lynn grew up in Clinton, Iowa and went to the University of Iowa where he played football and was named a Kinnick Scholar in honor of achievement in athletics and academics. He graduated from the University of Iowa as an Alpha Omega Alpha scholar. He completed his residency in neurology at the University of Iowa and remained in Iowa City as an associate professor, receiving numerous teaching awards. Lynn remained an avid fan of the university throughout his life.
In 1984 Lynn cofounded Kansas City Neurology Associates and practiced medicine in Kansas City for thirty years. In the latter part of his career he specialized in treating Alzheimer's disease and was cherished by patients and their families for his knowledge, sensitivity, and support. Upon his retirement he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the medical staff of Research Medical Center.
Lynn loved children, athletics, and the out of doors and was exceptionally giving in supporting others in these pursuits. He coached youth soccer, football and basketball, opened Kansas City Paddler to share his passion for canoes, kayaks and paddle boards, and was an active supporter of introducing children to the outdoors - most recently in conjunction with Operation Breakthrough.
Above all, Lynn loved his family. He was adored for his love, support and sense of humor--which unfortunately extended to his wardrobe! Lynn was an exceptionally loving grandfather, father, husband, and friend. He will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be Thursday Evening, February 26 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at McGilley State Line Chapel and the funeral will be at 11:00 am Friday, February 27 at the Unity Temple Plaza, 707 West 47th Street, Kansas City, MO, 64112. Donations may be given in his name to the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Operation Breakthrough and the Kansas City Alzheimer's Association.
