Marilyn Regina Murphy passed away on April 6, 2019. All services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, Kansas 66214 on Thursday, April 11. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a rosary. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas.
Marilyn was born on September 4, 1938 in Kansas City, Missouri to Thomas and Mary Felicita (Kennedy) Murphy. She attended Visitation Elementary School and St. Theresa’s Academy. She graduated from Fontbonne University in St. Louis with degrees in French and History and attained her master’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Webster University. She later completed additional study in French from Case Western Reserve University and in Theology from The University of Detroit. Education was her path. She spent ten years in the Congregation of Saint Joseph of Carondelet in St. Louis teaching in both elementary and secondary schools. She then returned to Kansas City and taught French and History at Notre Dame de Sion High School. Marilyn made a career change in 1980 when she joined Hallmark Cards in their marketing department and retired as a Gold Crown Marketing Strategist in 1999.
Marilyn came from a large Irish Catholic family. She relished the births of each niece and nephew and welcomed them with joy and love and an abundance of gifts. Her high school friends were a large part of her life as well. Every year they traveled together, and their support lasted through her whole life.
Her interests were varied. She loved sports, and fantasy football became a passion. Her knowledge of politics led to many spirited discussions. She was also active in the church and donated many hours to worthy causes.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her brother Thomas Murphy, her sisters, Sharon Murphy and Joann Murphy Coghlin. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Murphy Benson, Kathleen Murphy McGuire, and Julie Murphy Garwood, and a plethora of adoring nieces and nephews.
Marilyn brought such joy to this world and made a difference in so many lives. She will be missed.
