Marjolyn "Lynne" Owen

On Friday, Oct. 9th, 2020, Marjolyn Irene Owen went to heaven at the age of 58 with her husband and four children holding her hands and telling her how loved she is. She was born Aug. 7th, 1962, to Gerrit and Maria DeKreek after they immigrated to Bellflower, CA, from The Netherlands. She grew up playing and adventuring with her five siblings, Dirk, Anne, Joyce, Cathy, and Tedd, and had fond memories of family camping trips. She married her one-and-only, Donald Owen, on April 14th, 1984, and honeymooned in Yosemite, one of her favorite places.

They raised their two daughters, Heather and Allison, and two sons, D.J. and Jon, in Los Angeles and San Diego, CA, filled with beach days, play time outside, sports games, zoo trips, and pool parties, which she would always organize to bring people together. She loved road trips and exploring new places, which is a passion that was passed down to her children. Holidays were always packed with family and friends, of which she had so many, and it filled her heart to have everyone together.

In 2002, the family moved to Leawood, KS, where she kept the warmth and love bright, even through the new cold winters. Her husband and children will always cherish the long drives with her in the country, talks in the backyard over tea, puzzles in the kitchen while dinner was cooking, and the way she smiled while welcoming anyone into her home.

She joyfully became Grandma to her grandson, Jack, in 2015 and granddaughter, Delaney, in 2018 and is adored by them both. She delighted in playing with them, bringing them surprises, and taking them on adventures, and always made them feel special and loved.

Her great joys in life were her family, faith, helping others, and the outdoors, often walking and working on her land while singing a hymn. During her last days, she would often tell her family how peaceful she felt with them in the room, and would tell us that things are just things and you can only take people with you. She will always be remembered for her warm, welcoming spirit that can only be described in the Dutch word she would whisper during her happiest moments: gezellig (cozy).

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Donald Owen; brother, Dirk DeKreek, and his wife, Melody DeKreek; sister, Joyce DeKreek; brother, Tedd DeKreek, and his wife, Kelly DeKreek; daughter, Heather Werling, and her husband, Brett Werling; sons, D.J. Owen and Jon Owen; daughter, Allison Owen; and grandchildren, Jack and Delaney Werling.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gerrit and Maria DeKreek; sister, Anne DeKreek; and sister, Cathy DeKreek.

In lieu of flowers, she asks that contributions be made to metavivor.org in her honor after her tough-fought battle with metastatic breast cancer. Words could never express how much she will be missed.
