Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 9:00AM, followed by a Memorial Service at 10:00AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5601 West 62nd Street, Mission, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Trinity Lutheran Church Foundation designated “Chael Urban Ministry Fund” [https://tlcms.org/give], or to Metro Lutheran Ministry [https://www.mlmkc.org/donate-online.html].
Martha was born February 1, 1927 in Paducah, Kentucky and christened Martha Elizabeth Pool by parents Anna Hilke Pool and Ivan L. Pool. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School in 1944. Thereafter, she was employed as a dental assistant for several years after which she became an assistant bookkeeper and financial analyst for a Paducah Chrysler automobile dealership.
Martha married Frederick P. Chael on November 21, 1953 in Paducah. Following a short residency in St. Louis, MO, the couple moved to Kansas City in 1954. Thereafter, they were blessed with the gifts of four sons.
A strongly committed Christian, Martha was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was an active member of Trinity’s Social Action Commission and fondly remembered for her work with the resettlement of Vietnamese refugee families. She was also very active on Trinity’s religious Art Show Committee for several years. Reared in a family of limited resources, Martha became a strong advocate for the poor and homeless as a long-time volunteer for Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry, resulting in several recognition awards.
This busy wife, mother, and active volunteer also found time to earn a degree at Penn Valley Community College. At PVCC she discovered hidden artistic talents which led to an enjoyable avocation, but also helped raise funds for local charities.
Finally, she loved to “play” in her flower garden and to express her Christian joy in life singing praises to the Lord and her fellow man.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son David Chael, brothers Ivan and Charles Pool, and sister Mary Anna Monroe.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick Chael, sons Rick Chael (Kathleen), Mike Chael (Lori), and Ted Chael (Brenda), daughter-in-law Sue Ann Chael, brother John Pool, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
We will miss our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend…quite a gal she was. Bon voyage, Martha.
