Matthew was named after his grandfather, but it was that same grandfather who first called him “Matt-Chew.” Over time, the nickname “Chewie” took hold, becoming the name everyone knew him by. His childhood home was a welcoming place where friends often gathered, finding laughter, music, and a sense of safety on the family’s deck.
From an early age, Chewie developed a deep passion for music of all kinds. Saturday mornings at home were filled with cleaning, dancing, and the soundtrack of Shirley’s favorite records; a tradition that shaped his lifelong love of everything from heavy metal to David Bowie.
Chewie graduated from Raytown High School in 1998, where he lettered in choir. He later pursued his education at ITT Technical Institute in Kansas City, graduating with high honors and four honor cords in 2015. His career path took him first to Musician’s Friend on Front Street and then into the IT department at Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he dedicated six years of service.
Above all, Chewie was a devoted father, to both his children and his beloved furry companion. He encouraged Nexus and Dae to be true to themselves and provided unwavering love and support. Nexus especially felt their father’s presence as life-saving, simply through his kindness and steadfast example. His loyal dog, Prudence, held a special place in his heart from the very beginning; he would visit her often as a puppy, even before she left her mother, bringing Nexus to Josh and Lindsay’s to share in the joy.
Chewie will be remembered for his sensitive spirit, sharp wit, and the way his laughter could brighten any room.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Jerome Long, and his grandparents, Juanita and Matthew Gardner, and Joseph and Ida May Long.
He is survived by his children, Nexus and Dae Long; his parents, Shirley and Clifford Long; his cousins; Michael Gardner, Jarrett Gardner and Lindsay Starbuck; his nephew, Memphis Long, and his faithful companion, Prudence.
A visitation will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery.
