

Mike was born August 5,1955, to Gerald and Nina McWilliams McComas, and grew up in Grandview, MO.
A graduate of Grandview High School in 1974, and CSMU (University of Central Missouri) in 1978. Mike began his teaching career in the Hickman Mills School District. He then transferred to Grandview East Junior High School (Middle School). Mike taught social studies and coached football, girl’s basketball, and track. In 1995, he was chosen as Teacher of the Year. He was also awarded the Key to Lenexa, Kansas, for his work in the program BE2, encouraging businesses to partner with schools.
Mike served as Executive Director for Grandview’s peer to peer Youth Court program for 26 years. He made learning the judicial system fun along with teaching the kids responsibility and accountability for their actions. His work with community youth earned him the Grandview Citizen of the Year award for 1995.
Mike was an Eagle Scout and worked with several troops in the Grandview area: Troop 217, Troop 555 at Trails West School for the Severely Handicapped, and Troop 364 at St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church with his sons.
Mike’s second career was as an IBM configuration specialist for several companies. In 2004, he earned the award for Outstanding Performance by Sirius Computer Solutions.
Mike was #452 to receive a heart transplant at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City. He fought bad health for many years with different viruses and complications, still holding strong in his faith. Mike was a walking miracle. In the end it was lung cancer that spread too fast for his body to handle.
Mike was preceded in death by his brother John, father Gerald, mother Nina and sister Patti Clark. He is survived by his wife Angela Rinke McComas, his children John, Gerald and RuthAnn; his brother and sister-in-law, Garry and Kim McComas of Overland Park; and four nephews.

Visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131, on May 21, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm, followed by a Memorial Service at the same location at 4:00
