Nancy Rita Shull (Same) passed peacefully on December 5, 2025. Nancy was born on March 10, 1939, to Ted and Martha Same in Syracuse, New York. Due to job transfers associated with her father’s position at a railroad company, the family moved to Albany, New York when she was eight years old, and then to Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 10 years old, and finally to Kansas City a few years later. Set up on a blind date, she met the love of her life, Gordon, marrying him on April 23, 1960.
Although she worked as a legal secretary and then a realtor, Nancy said her proudest accomplishments were being a wife and mother. However, she was much more than that. She was very spiritual, always seeking a deeper meaning with God and with those around her. She was outgoing and social, valuing the many friendships she and Gordon made with neighbors, and those people she met through travel and church. Nancy was also an avid bridge player her entire life traveling to tournaments, and eventually earning the level of Ruby Life Master in bridge. When Gordon retired, they had the goal of traveling the world, seeking out many adventures in places such as Australia, New Zealand, Peru, China, Vietnam, and Africa. They also spent many winters in Akumal, Mexico snorkeling and experiencing the rich culture of the area.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Martha Same, and her sister, Shirley Whitehead. She is survived by her husband, Gordon Shull, and their children Jeff Shull (Karen), Beth Windsor (David), and Patrick Shull (Kathy) and grandsons Brian Shull, Scott Shull, and Andy Shull. She also leaves behind her nephew, David Whitehead, a close family member who was very supportive in the care of Nancy, providing help whenever needed.
Nancy gave the ultimate gift upon her passing, by bequeathing her body to the University of Kansas to further support the training of future physicians and aid in medical studies and research. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a local animal shelter. Dates and details regarding a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
Nancy’s smile and laughter lit up a room, and will be missed by all who knew her.
