With great sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Peter C. Boylan Jr. of Prairie Village, KS on April 20, 2013 (77). He was born in Cleveland, OH on August 19, 1935 to Dr. Peter and Ruth Seaborn Boylan. The eldest of five children, he was always a devoted big brother with a passion for helping others, which led to his decision to become a doctor. Educated in the Cleveland Catholic school system and later attending Gilmour Academy for high school, he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1953 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. He attended John Carroll University, a private Jesuit Catholic University in Cleveland, OH, graduated from St. Louis University Medical School where he received his M.D., and completed a residency in orthopaedics in Indiana.
Dr. Boylan joined the United States Air Force in 1960, and served active duty as a medical officer stationed at Brookley Air Force base in Mobile, AL before receiving an honorable discharge in 1963 from extended active duty. In 1967, he moved to the Kansas City area and joined the orthopedic practice of Rockhill Orthopaedics, formerly Hamilton and James. Dr. Boylan served on the board of directors of Health Midwest and was the senior partner in Rockhill Orthopaedics for many years. He served in the role as President for the following organizations: Baptist Medical Center Foundation, Kansas City International Wine and Food Society, Baptist Medical Staff, Missouri State Orthopaedic Association, and Kansas City Orthopaedic Society. His dedication and compassion were hallmarks of his personality which lead to a career that allowed him to care for thousands of patients over the course of more than 50 years in practice.
In 1962, he married the former Patricia Cramer of Kansas City, MO. They had three children. In 1978, he married Carroll Jay of Overland Park, KS and they had one child.
He had a life-long love affair with barbeque and was known for his award winning Pistol Pete's Chili. He was as an active member of the Kansas City Barbeque Society and served many terms as the Chairman of Judging for the American Royal BBQ competition. He enjoyed gardening and took great pride in having a perfectly manicured lawn, nurturing his sterling silver roses, and tending to his plants and flowers. He was fortunate to share many friendships during his years as a member of Saddle & Sirloin, Carriage Club and Leawood Country Club. A communicant at the Curé of Ars Catholic Church, Dr. Boylan was a passionate Catholic man, attending services daily to find strength. He loved his children and grandchildren, often hosting them for backyard events where they would fish, catch frogs, and jump on the trampoline.
Dr. Boylan leaves behind his children Peter C. Boylan III and his wife Kathy of Tulsa, OK and their children Peter IV (17) and Taylor (15); Wendy Boylan Melland and her husband Patrick of Kansas City, MO and their children Bryan (17), Tricia (14), and Andrew (12); David S. Boylan of Dallas, TX and his children David II (8) and Lauren (4); Amy Boylan Bailey and her husband Andrew of New York, NY; and stepson Mark T.J. Boylan and his wife Kerrie of Overland Park, KS and their children Tom(18), Mike (16) and Hank (11). Also mourning his death are Peter's brother William Boylan and his wife Ann of Union City, CA; his brother John Boylan of Cleveland, OH; and his sister Judy Boylan Lally of Cleveland, OH. He is predeceased by his sister, Barbara Boylan Campbell.
Visitation will be held at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, KCMO, Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 5-7 pm, rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be held to celebrate his life at Curé of Ars Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 10 am.
