Longtime Kansas City area resident, Robert J. “Bob” Nugent died unexpectedly at his Shawnee home on July 19, 2011. He was 51 years old and was most recently employed as manager of the Catholic Charities TurnStyles store in Overland Park. His earlier careers included barbering and auto sales. Bob attended school in Topeka and graduated from Topeka High in 1978. He also attended Kansas and Washburn Universities. Bob participated in varsity football and wrestling at Topeka High, and continued to enjoy sports, hunting and fishing as an adult. He particularly liked working with volunteers at TurnStyles. However, his life was centered around his two boys, Joseph Nugent, 19 and Anthony Nugent, 9, and their various interests and activities. Bob loved to cook for them, often grilling outside in any sort of weather. Other survivors include his mother and stepdad, JoAnne and Larry Armel, Leawood; Joe’s mom Kelsie Douglas, Kansas City; Anthony’s mom Petrina Lopez, Kansas City; his uncle and aunt Joseph and Shirley Brocato; his great-aunts Pearl DeMayo and Josephine Passantino; aunts Gloria Benz and Virginia Armel; and numerous cousins, including Scott, Mike and Joe, Jr. Brocato. Although they have been gone for awhile, Bob never forgot the kindness and care of his beloved maternal grandparents, Stella and Bill Brocato. A funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Nativity, 119th Street and Mission Road, Leawood at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, with visitation 9:30 a.m. Burial will be held in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Catholic Charities, Animal Haven, The First Tee of Kansas City, or a charity of donor’s choice. Condolences may be offered at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com. Arrangements under the direction of Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO.
