Shirley Mae Beer

Shirley Mae Beer, age 87, Overland Park, Kansas passed away May 30, 2017 at Menorah Medical Center from a heart attack. She was born August 24, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri. Shirley was the oldest daughter of two born to Fred Hartmann and Mabel (Ferguson) Hartmann. She graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri in 1946. She graduated from the Junior College of Kansas City with an Associate of Arts degree in 1948. Shirley worked as a secretary in the insurance field and eventually completed courses to become a claims adjuster.

She met the love of her life, Carl Lacey Beer, at a local dance and they married June 29, 1949. They lived happily together until his death in 1978. Shirley was a devoted wife, mom and grandma. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids. She also loved her home that Carl built in 1963 in Nall Hills and remained there for 54 years.

She enjoyed reading cozy mystery books, doing daily crossword puzzles from the Kansas City Star, yardwork, and in her younger years, dancing. She was an accomplished seamstress making drapes, curtains and clothing.

She is survived by her children, Randy (Marion) Beer of Chicago, Illinois; Daryl Beer of the home; and Pam (Mike) Setter of Humboldt, Kansas; Carl (Pat) Beer of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; Posy (Sonny) Trefz of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; her sister, Jody Vandelac and niece Robin (Dick) Beeson of Tacoma, Washington. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rachael Beer of Arlington, Virginia; Marc Beer of Chicago, Illinois; David Setter of Pittsburg, Kansas; Jeremy (Kasie) Setter of Humboldt, Kansas; Anna Setter of Humboldt, Kansas; Carl Lee Beer of Overland Park, Kansas; Kurt (Cindy) Beer or Lee’s Summit Missouri, Kip (Lori) Beer of Kansas City, Missouri; Sandy Beer of Overland Park, Kansas; Chris (Joy) Gabel of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and Kelly Pfefferkorn of Lake Lotawana, Missouri.

A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Mount Moriah, Newcomer, & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
