He worked for the Kansas City Water Department for 48 years, retiring as an inspector when he was 73. He could have retired many years earlier, but he loved his job so much. He liked that his fellow workers and supervisors called him "Chief" because of all the years he had been there and all the knowledge that he had.
Steve was born on July 15, 1943 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of Patrick and Clara Baretta. Steve graduated from East High School in Kansas City and attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Before working for the city, he served in the Army and in Vietnam.
He enjoyed playing cards, working in the yard, traveling, and watching sports. He loved playing tennis when he was younger and continued playing into his sixties.
Steve was known for his trademark red socks that he wore everyday. He was a hardworking and generous man who loved animals. He would do anything anyone asked of him and also offer help when they didn't ask.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Christina, his daughter, Susan, his sister, Sheila Henson and his aunt, Jackie Stephenson.
