Tom lived a full and unforgettable life. Born in Kansas City in 1947, Tom proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1965-1969, where he developed the discipline, work ethic, and sense of duty that shaped the rest of his life. Following his military service, he began an over 40-year career as an electrician at General Mills. Known for his reliability and skill, Tom was a trusted colleague and friend throughout his many years of dedicated work. It is here that he earned the affectionate nickname “Sparkie” for obvious reasons.
Tom was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. Here, he provided many hours of volunteer work at Holy Name Catholic Church.
As a passionate cook, Tom was best known for his legendary BBQ ribs - grilled to perfection - and served with love at countless family gatherings and backyard cookouts. He found true joy in bringing people together through food and laughter.
An important part of Tom’s life was his deep love and friendship with Joe and Libby Ramirez and the entire Ramirez family. Tom and Joe spent countless hours together in various activities. They joined each other in home improvement projects, which were always a good excuse to get together to share stories about the old neighborhood, have a few beers, and give each other a hard time – even if was about things that happened decades prior. These days always ended with a good home cooked meal made by Libby and Athena. Tom and Joe also loved serving as honorary bartenders whenever they had the chance. They always had a great time, but it’s fair to say that one of the duo (Tom) liked to talk more than work.
But above all, Tom was a devoted family man. He cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and friends. Whether enjoying a Sunday meal, telling old Coast Guard tales, or simply sitting on his front porch to watch storms, Tom lived life on his own terms.
He is survived by his sisters Mary Ann (Bonnie) Hare and Betty Dunlap; his children, Athena (Andy) Dickson, William (Jessica) Carey and Mary Anne (Dale) Preston; grandchildren, Catherine, Gloria, Krystina, Destiny, Jayson, Nathan, Maximus, Ellie, Khristian, Sam and Liam; and other loving nieces and great grandchildren.
