Whitney was born on February 20, 1981 in Kansas City, Missouri. Whitney attended Visitation Catholic School, Kansas City Academy, and spent time studying at both the University of Kansas and Johnson County Community College. Her favorite thing growing up was playing school with her dad—we were sure she’d grow up to be a teacher. Though her career path took different turns, including several retail jobs, Whitney ultimately found her calling as a caregiver for a 15-year-old boy with cerebral palsy—a role she embraced with compassion and dedication.
Dancing was one of her earliest passions: ballet, modern dance, and Irish step dancing brought her joy and expression. Music moved her deeply; it often made her emotional. She laughed all the way through the telling of jokes, but could never remember the punch lines-something that always made us smile.
Throughout her teen and adult years, Whitney bravely battled anxiety and depression. She sought help and never stopped trying to find peace amidst the noise. In recent months, she had found joy in newfound independence—decorating her own apartment and delighting in making it a home. Her voice carried a new lightness, often punctuated with a giggle. She was truly happy.
Whitney adored cats and cared for many throughout her life. She had a huge heart and a generous spirit, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She leaves behind her loving parents, Doug and Bonnie Pearson; her sister Jocelyn Pearson, brother-in-law Taylor Smith, and their children, Hunter and Eva. She is also remembered fondly by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
As Whitney often reminded us, she did not want a funeral. To honor her wishes, a private graveside celebration of her life will be held with her immediate family.
Whitney benefited from behavioral health services throughout her life. In memory of Whitney, in lieu of flowers, we are asking that you consider making a donation in her honor, in order to help someone else who may be facing similar struggles. This memorial fund will be donated to the University Health Behavioral Health Department with the very specific intent to help those who are suffering and in need. We believe that Whitney would be happy to be remembered in a way that may benefit someone who could live a better and easier life with help from services provided by the UH Behavioral Health Department. Thank you for your gift in honor of Whitney.
