Annie Laurie “Sister” Dehnert went to be with her Savior on August 9, 2018 following her long battle with Alzheimer’s. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by her family and loved ones. Sister was a beloved wife, a cherished mother, a most precious grandmother and a treasured friend to many. She was loved, adored, and known by her grandson as “Mop” and by those who cared for her as “Ms. Annie”. Sister touched many lives and lit up every room she entered with her contagious smile and laughter.
She was born on December 5, 1930 in Tulsa, OK. Her family later moved to Houston, where she graduated from San Jacinto High School. She attended Louisiana State University and the University of Houston and was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi sorority.
In 1958, she married her true love John W. Dehnert, Jr., whom she met while working at Humble Oil Company. They raised their two daughters in the Braesmont subdivision in Houston and enjoyed family trips to the Texas Hill Country, Galveston and Rockport.
Sister loved nature, whether it be hunting for sharks teeth or sea glass on the beach, listening to the birds sing or admiring the beautiful Texas wildflowers. She was a most talented artist and poet, which she shared with her best friend and husband John.
One of her most favorite pastimes was having coffee with her husband and friends at the neighborhood coffee shop “Jim's, aka Champs”. They all spent hours sharing stories and teaching those around them life’s lessons and simple acts of kindness. The love and laughter shared at their booth was heard and seen by all who entered. Sister loved her family and life, and celebrated each moment with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. In her later years, her favorite saying was “Whoop Dee Doo”!
She spent her last 9+ years under the loving care of her daughter Laurie, who showed the world what selfless and unconditional love truly is. They went to many social gatherings and school reunions where she danced and laughed with both old and new friends. She will be deeply missed and loved forever!
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Vincent Hewitt and Annie Grey Hewitt; her husband, John W. Dehnert, Jr.; and her brother, James Cass Hewitt. She is survived by her daughter Laurie Dehnert; daughter Myna Letlow and her husband Casey Letlow; her grandson Cole Letlow, as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Her daughters are most thankful for the loving care and friendship of Kiddest Sanna, who over the past 3 years brought so much joy and laughter into their home and comforted their mother as if she was her own. They also express their gratitude for the thoughtful care given to their mother during her final months by the nurses and staff at Houston Hospice and all the caregivers and office staff with Temporary Home Care. Your presence brought so much peace and comfort to the family and we are forever thankful.
