Bruce William Fong, 69, was surrounded by his entire family in Katy, TX, when he went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 7, 2022. Bruce was born on March 29, 1952, in Sacramento, CA to William G.T. Fong and Marie Dian Mar Fong. He lived in California, Washington, Texas, Scotland, Oregon and Michigan before finally settling back in Texas. He graduated from C. K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento, CA.
Bruce was blessed with a Timothy testimony. His grandmother brought him to church when he was a youngster. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior around the age of eight during a Sunday morning service. As a young adult, Bruce went to Western Baptist Bible College to seek answers to the endless questions he had about his faith. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Bible, he did an internship as the Assistant Pastor at a country church in Nooksack, WA. This experience confirmed his calling to full-time Christian ministry. So Bruce went to Dallas Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Theology in New Testament. Subsequent to his seminary graduation, Bruce served as the Pastor of Chinese Baptist Church in Portland, OR. While pastoring at Chinese Baptist Church, Bruce also taught at Multnomah University. It was during this time in Oregon that Bruce and Yvonne were blessed with the birth of their three children. God then led him to pursue Ph.D. studies in Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. After completing his residence academic work, Bruce was invited to teach at Multnomah Biblical Seminary where he was a Professor of Bible Exposition, Homiletics & Pastoral Theology. Ten years later, Bruce answered the call to become President at Michigan Theological Seminary in Plymouth, MI where he and Yvonne lived for another decade. Bruce’s next ministry was a short stint as Interim Pastor at Grace Bible Church in Ann Arbor, MI. This was followed by two years back in his home state of California
serving as the English Lead Pastor at Sunset Church in San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Bruce was recruited by the President of Dallas Theological Seminary to serve as the Dean of the DTS-Houston campus. During his active ministry days, Bruce served as a board member for Promise Keepers, Pinnacle Forum, Joni & Friends, Christian Service International and Iron Sharpens Iron. He was also a frequent speaker at various churches and family, marriage and men’s conferences around the country. Bruce was also a published author of various books and articles on life, faith and church.
Bruce was affectionately known to many as “PB” (Pastor Bruce). He loved spending time with his family, friends and students. Bruce’s hobbies outside of ministry were bicycling, swimming, fishing, hunting, musicals and dramas. His favorite vacation spot was Disney World and he loved traveling with Yvonne to places like Israel, Cabo, Cancun, and anywhere his children and grandchildren resided. He will be remembered for his phrases like, “You are loved,” “There’s no place I would rather be…,” “Eager for His Return,” and “Joy!” He was a gifted preacher, teacher, and has been described as a ‘master storyteller’ because of his memorable illustrations and jokes. Bruce also had a mischievous sense of humor and loved to tease. His favorite food was beef ribs and favorite drink was root beer. Bruce was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Bruce was the third born of the late William and Marie Fong. Bruce is survived by his devoted wife Yvonne, his children Kristin and Dustin, Justin and Breanna, Jeremy and Cassee and his four amazing grandchildren: Lucas, Eva, Sydney and Sammy. He is also survived by his sister Bellory (Chuck)
Knutson; his brother Vernon (Wanda) Fong; his brother Creighton (Judy) Fong; and his nephews and niece, Chip, Toby, Kyle, Leanne and Matrix.
