On July 18, 2023, Dorothy Annie Kinnamon, age 87, of Richmond, Texas, passed away at home surrounded by family and friends. Although her health had been declining for the past few years, during her final week, she was diagnosed with colon cancer with multiple metastases including to her lungs. Her family is so thankful that she is resting in the arms of The Lord, surrounded by those who have gone before her. She was known equally as Mom, Grandma, Sis and Aunt Dottie.
Dorothy is a native Houstonian, born February 5, 1936, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and residing her entire life in the Houston area. She was the oldest of 7 children, and the only girl. As a young woman, she enjoyed ballroom dancing, and never lost her love for it. More recently, she enjoyed watching Dancing with the Stars every week with her family and offering critique of the dancers. She never tired of listening to classic country music, and after she lost her sight, she would spend her days listening to the music she loved.
She was fortunate to be able to travel with her family. Her daughters took her on a surprise cruise for her 70th birthday and the memories made on that trip live on. She also traveled to Nashville, TN, Branson, MO, and New Orleans, LA, to name a few. When extended weekends were all that was available, Coushatta Casino in Kinder, LA was always a consideration. Dorothy enjoyed going to the Fort Bend Senior’s Center while she was still mobile. She would always have her hair fixed, her lipstick on, the bold and fun jewelry and she loved her bright colored clothing. When there was a themed party, she would spend time discussing outfits and had fun putting them together. The bus driver would always remark on how great she looked! Those who worked at the Senior’s Center called her sassy and she was much loved among the regulars there.
Dorothy was a kind and thoughtful soul who will be missed by so many for the way she touched their lives. She never had a bad word to say about anyone and would never complain. She was so very thoughtful of those around her and even when she wasn’t physically able to any longer, she always asked if she could help. She loved relaxing in her easy chair, and always had one or more of the family’s dogs on her lap, especially Shakira who was her baby.
Another pastime that she enjoyed was playing Bingo and her daughters took her as often as possible while she was still able to attend. She also loved her neighbors and even when she could no longer walk, she wanted to sit outside in her wheelchair with her family and visit with all of them. They have provided endless love and support for as long as we’ve known them.
Dorothy was quick witted and had an undying sense of humor. She would refer to her morning coffee as her “starter fluid” and when she finished each cup, she would blame her daughter in law Suzanne for “drinking all my coffee” before getting another one. She never met a stranger, and once during a trip to New Orleans, her family put her in a wheelchair and took her to see live music in a nightclub. A group of young couples came in, and she was so excited when they all came over, wheeled her onto the dance floor and she was able to “dance” with them for an hour. Her adventurous spirit will be missed by so many.
Dorothy is survived by children Cathy Wright, Dennis Kinnamon and wife Phyllis, Vicki Beckman and wife Suzanne, Teresa Kinnamon and partner Art Acuna, and Monty Bowden. She was proud of her 11 grandchildren Cindi Wright, Sandy Danley, Richard Rodriguez, Kris Rodriguez, Brett Rodriguez, Sherie Housholder, Jennifer Thompson, Kyle Markovits, Mariah Markovits, Jim McLain and Melissa McLain, as well as brothers Jerry Dean and wife Betty and Aaron Elmer Tyler. Special mention goes to her long-time caregiver Dolores Rodriguez who has become a part of her family during the years she lovingly dedicated to her. She is preceded in death by husband Dallas Kinnamon, daughter Wanda McLain, and brothers Leonard “Lee” Anderson, Alfred Froud, Charles “Chuck” Froud and Paul Archer. Her numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews were so special to her.
The family invites all who knew and loved her to join them for remembrance and services. A visitation with family will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Katy Funeral Home in Katy, Texas, from 10am to 11am, immediately followed by services from 11am – 11:45am. A short graveside service will be held at Rosewood Cemetery in Humble, TX, for those who can join the procession.
