Edith Maria Dunbar, beloved educator, passed away on February 3, 2020, after a courageous 7 month battle with ALS.
On October 30, 1969, Edith Maria Dunbar was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Nathaniel and Myrtle Jones Dunbar. While attending school in the Kansas City, Missouri school district, Edith had a vision. Her dream was to help children reach their potential by providing a nurturing, stimulating environment based on each child's individual needs. She decided to become an elementary school teacher to accomplish her goal.
After graduating from Northeast High School in 1987, she attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City, where she received her B.A. in Education (1994) and Masters Degree in Reading Education in 1999.
She was a dedicated, compassionate, caring teacher for a total of 25 years. She taught 7 years in the Kansas City Public School District, 6 years in Jefferson Parrish, and 12 years in the Cy-Fair Independent School District. .
Edith was friendly and outgoing. Her beautiful smile was contagious and welcoming, making strangers instant friends. She was warm, compassionate, and giving. She would cheerfully help those in need, you didn't have to ask. She enjoyed spending time with friends. Her curiosity and love of reading led her to travel extensively around the country to the places she read about; the UAE, Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean.
She was preceded in death by her parents Nathaniel and Myrtle Dunbar.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her brother Nathaniel Dunbar of Concord, California; her sisters, Betty Jones, Aileen Pruitt, Rena Goodwin (Dennis) of Kansas City, Missouri, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends, In lieu of flowers, donations in Edith's name may be made to the ALS Association.
