1961 – 2023
Jorge Sera passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the age of 62. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of almost 40 years, Tania Sera; daughter, Amanda Sera; mother, Miriam Sera; sisters, Mayte Sera Weitzman and Mairim Van Domselaar and their husbands, Javier and Robert, respectively; brother, Eddie Sera and wife Karina; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Jorge was born in Washington, D.C. on June 18, 1961, to Carlos Sera and Miriam Sera. He was extremely proud of his Cuban heritage, and the culture and beliefs of the country would strongly influence his life. When his family moved to Houston, Jorge quickly became part of the community. He graduated from St. Thomas High School and was later a strong supporter of the school for its ability to unite faith and education. After marrying Tania, whom he met in 1979, and having their first and only child, Amanda, the young family resided in Houston before a brief stint in Brenham, Texas, where they spent several years in the countryside. They eventually moved back to Houston and have lived here ever since.
Jorge’s love of community and giving back drove him to a life of volunteering and civic leadership. Drawing on his past in Brenham, Jorge was a longtime “Blue Blazer” and part of the Brenham Chamber of Commerce. A member of the Knights of Columbus since 2000, he was eventually elected as the Grand Knight of the local council. Generous with his time and dedicated to those he served, he was also involved with Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, and the Spring Branch Community Health Center, where he was a Board Member as well as several other charity-focused organizations. In addition, he was a Spanish interpreter on the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s International Committee for 16 years.
Jorge was passionate about travel and saw wonder and joy in all corners of the world, adventures waiting to happen and experiences shared. He was gentle and kind and believed in the power of friendship and the value in taking care of the lives that he touched, even if they were acquaintances or passersby. No one was a stranger to Jorge, and he would frequently strike up conversation with anyone and everyone. He was an avid wine drinker and cigar enthusiast who, at one point, co-owned a cigar company called Savannah Cigars. He loved his twice-a-week breakfasts with the Houston International Group—a local men’s group—and in all his years with them, he never missed a breakfast. As a member of the “Caballeros de la Virgen Maria,” Jorge was part of a weekly Houston prayer group that met to worship and lift up prayer for people everywhere who needed blessings.
Most importantly, Jorge was tireless in his pursuit of happiness for his wife and daughter and never failed to put their needs ahead of his own. A devout Catholic, Jorge’s faith was a guiding light for his life and central to who he was. At the end of his life, Jorge was able to take Communion and receive the Apostolic Blessing and Indulgences of his Catholic faith.
The Recitation of the Rosary will be held at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church this coming Sunday, July 23 at 4PM and a Mass on Monday, July 24 at 10AM. Jorge will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Memorial Oaks Cemetery thereafter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Jorge’s name.
