A life best lived is one where the person wants and strives to be “just an ordinary guy.” That was Mickey Lynn Vann’s life motto, but the truth is he was an extraordinary guy.
Often referred to as “that Mickey,” he was born on November 2, 1953 in Commerce, Texas to Carolyn Frazer and Dewitt Cravens. At the age of four, the family moved to Deer Park. Mickey attended Deer Park Senior High where he spent many a day running track and cross-country. He was a life-long avid runner.
After graduation in 1972, he attended East Texas State University. He worked in the oil and gas field with the majority of his career at Exxon Mobil in Baytown, Texas. He was a GTG Control Specialist.
Mickey had a passion for life, was a devoted humanitarian, never met a stranger, and lived with a humble and compassionate heart. He spent many of his later years serving his community and the Lord through volunteering at St. Mark’s UMC, and most recently St. Peter’s UMC—the Livingstone campus.
Mickey was called home on July 4, 2016 after an eight year battle with cancer. His fight was brave and handled with an attitude that when bad news came he shrugged his shoulders and said, “It’s okay.”
Mickey leaves behind his wife of thirty two years, Cathi Vann. His son, Todd Vann and wife Danielle. Daughter Chelsea Gumm and husband Jim. His sister Christy Bunton, sister Amanda Baker and her husband Lynn, brother Ben Barnett and wife Karen, and brothers Tim Barnett and Walter Vann. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Delaney, Madison, Emma, Chappell and Lily. He leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and too many friends to name.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 9th at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s UMC in Baytown. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mickey’s honor to St. Peter’s UMC to support the building of the new west campus building. Donations can also be made online at www.stpkaty.com.
Arrangements under the direction of Katy Funeral Home, Katy, TX.
