Tanya M. Flugence was born on January 27, 1968, and was called home to be with the Lord on December 12, 2025. She was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, family member, and friend whose life was marked by grace, strength, and an adventurous spirit that reflected her deep appreciation for God’s creation and the beauty of the world around her.
Tanya lived life boldly and authentically, meeting every season with grace and unwavering faith. Throughout her long and difficult health journey—while waiting patiently for a kidney transplant and later facing a diagnosis of kidney cancer—Tanya remained steadfast and strong. Even in moments of uncertainty and pain, she never allowed her circumstances to define her spirit. Time and time again, she rose with courage, fought with determination, and leaned on her faith, showing all who knew her what true strength, resilience, and perseverance look like.
Tanya’s faith was evident not only in her words, but in her actions. She had a heart for giving and found great purpose in serving others. Tanya volunteered with the Houston Food Bank, helped hand out meals to the homeless, and gave her time volunteering at the George R. Brown Convention Center. During the Christmas and Thanksgiving seasons, she joyfully served families by distributing food through Gallery Furniture. Her generosity, compassion, and servant’s heart were a true reflection of God’s love in action.
The military was also a family of its own to Tanya and became a village that supported her throughout her life’s journey. Through military life, she built lifelong friendships and meaningful connections that surrounded her with love, encouragement, and support as she traveled and lived around the world. That village remained a constant source of strength, fellowship, and community throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her cherished grandparents, Marquerite and Melvin Ballard, Jr., and Rufus and Izetta Thomas, whose love, prayers, and guidance helped shape the woman she became.
Tanya leaves to cherish her precious memory her beloved daughter, Talia Pilar Flugence, the apple of her eye, and her loving parents, Martha Thomas and Melvin Ballard III, whose unwavering support and love sustained her throughout her life.
She is also lovingly remembered by a host of aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and family friends whose lives were forever touched by her kindness, strength, and unwavering spirit.
A woman of faith, Tanya trusted God’s plan even when the journey was uncertain. Though our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice in knowing that she now rests in eternal peace—healed, whole, and welcomed home with open arms.
A celebration of life will be held in her honor, where family and friends will gather to give thanks for a life beautifully lived. Service details are below.
