

Born in Suncook, NH, on February 24, 1930, he was the son of Dr. Benjamin and Dorothy Millen Freeman. Dr. Freeman married the former Marilyn Jane DeGoede on July 13, 1957, in Jamestown, NY.
Dr. Freeman graduated from Pembroke Academy in 1948, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, and received his medical degree in 1956 from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He completed his internship at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH and served as a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps from 1957-1959 at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. He served a residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and in 1961 accepted a position at the Keene Clinic. He also served on the staff at the Cheshire Medical Center.
Dr. Freeman was a past president of the Keene Clinic, chairman of the Pediatric department and a past president of the New Hampshire Pediatric Society. He served as Keene’s school physician from 1969 to 1995 and was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Maternal and Child Health at Dartmouth Medical School. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a founding member of the Irish and American Pediatric Society, and a member of the American Medical Association, as well as numerous other professional organizations. Dr. Freeman was also a long-term member of the Spofford Yacht Club and Saint James Episcopal Church.
Since his retirement from pediatric practice, he served on the Board of Directors of the Keene Day Care Center, Camp Holiday, the Cedarcrest Foundation, was a member of the Keene Rotary Club, and served as an examining physician for the well-child clinics of Home Healthcare and Community Services of Keene. Dr. Freeman’s leisure time after his retirement allowed him to renew his life-long passion for music. An accomplished pianist, he continued to study music and performed at numerous functions as a member of the New Directions Trio, a group of retired physicians turned musicians.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Marilyn (DeGoede) Freeman of Keene; son Douglas A. Freeman of Saint Petersburg, FL; daughter Janet L. Freeman of Swanzey, NH; daughter Katherine F. Slade (Jeffrey) of Bennington, VT; son Christopher L. Freeman (Sarah) of Menomonie, WI; grandchildren, Jennifer Slade Costello (Jamison), Andrew P. Slade, Rowan J. Freeman, and Levi C. Freeman; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Lawrence A. Freeman and sister, Phyllis L. McGavern.
The family will be in attendance for calling hours at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene on Sunday, January 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Funeral service will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, 44 West Street Keene on Monday, January 4th at 1 PM with burial to follow at 2:15 PM.
