He was born in Westmoreland, NH, September 27, 1934. He grew up in Winchester, NH and was a 1952 graduate of Thayer High School. While in high school, he participated on the school’s sports teams, excelling in basketball and baseball.
Mr. Nelson worked for 38 years with Public Service Company of New Hampshire, first as a lineman, then as truck supervisor, and later as an electrical superintendent in the Newport, NH office of Public Service. A resident of Newport for 24 years, Mr. Nelson was a member of the Newport Lions Club. He returned to Keene in 2005.
He served in the Army Reserves. He also served for many years as a part-time police officer for the City of Keene. He was active in the Big Brothers Big Sisters, and was a member of the Keene Elks Club. He enjoyed playing softball and bowling, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed coin collecting, and was an avid landscaper and gardener, taking great pride in his handiwork around his home. His favorite pastime was the special times spent with his family. He was a proud father and a true gentleman with a kind heart, terrific sense of humor and loveable personality.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary J. (Cheney) Nelson of Westmoreland; his sons, David E. Nelson of Keene, Earl D. Nelson of Marlborough, NH, Mark E. Nelson of Stoddard, NH; six grandchildren, Erica Taylor, Leslie Nelson, Mark R. Nelson, Jessica Perra, Brian Perra and Mandy Johnson; seven great-grandchildren, Aubrey Taylor, Brendan Taylor, Logan Ritchie, Ryan Nelson, Skylar Nelson, Cayden Nelson, Sophie Johnson; a brother, Donald Nelson of Langdon, NH; a sister, Dorothy Buffum of Henniker, NH; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Luther Nelson and Guy Nelson; and his sisters, Barbara Secord, Alice Brown, Emma Nash, and Marion Cutter.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 1:00PM in the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery, Winchester, will be private. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home.
