He was born in Keene, on September 8, 1954, the son of the late Richard F. Leighton and Dorothy M. (Shillady) Leighton of Keene, NH.
He graduated from Keene High School in 1972. He played football receiving the unsung hero award. He enjoyed tennis, singing in the A Cappella choir, playing trombone in the Keene High band and being in the Honor Society. When he was a senior, he was named Student of the Month by the Keene Shopper News. He was King of the Senior Prom.
He went onto UNH for 1 year, and then transferred to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. After graduation he worked at the Peterborough Pharmacy for a year, before moved onto the CVS Pharmacy in Claremont. After a couple of years he moved back to Keene and became head pharmacist for the Hannaford Plaza CVS for ten years.
When the dawning of personal computers began in the 1980’s, he took a keen interest in them. He became very knowledgeable and soon started a store on West Street called MacEdge. He eventually bought out a store in Dover and started one in Nashua. He later on moved the Dover store to Portsmouth.
A group of his high school friends have gotten together once a year since they graduated. In the early years they used to go kayaking every summer. Now their activities have slowed down.
His interests were his “toys” - Apple products and watching football.
He is survived by his mother: Dorothy M. Leighton of Keene; his brother: Brian R. Leighton and his wife Maria Dolores of Keene. Gary has enjoyed time with his four nieces: April, Leona, Mary, Briana Leighton and nephew John Leighton. He is also survived by a number of cousins.
