His parents, Vivian M and Alma (Gilner) Henderson, proudly welcomed their son into the world on October 21, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Howard was a graduate of Colorado Springs High School. While in high school, he was a star athlete on the school’s track team. He was also the captain of the golf team.
Howard proudly served his country in the Army from September 1950 through September 1952 during the Korean War, earning the rank of Corporal.
A dedicated and hard worker, Howard started his work career working with his father in Nome Alaska, building an airbase during World War II. The family moved to California where he began his career as an engineer in communications, working for Pacific Bell Telephone Company in California, then moving to South Bend, Indiana, where Howard worked for Indiana Bell later known as AT&T. He retired after 35 years of service.
Howard was an avid golfer, having successfully scored two holes-in-one, including one at the age of 84. In his early years, he loved to ski, including skiing down Pikes Peak in Colorado. Howard was a very active man throughout his life, and of most recent, his was a member of the Senior Swingers at the Keene Senior Center.
He enjoyed spending his winters in Florida. This is where he met his wife, Glenda. Howard moved to Westmoreland, NH in 1994, and in 2003, he and Glenda built their own home in North Swanzey. They moved to Keene in 2013.
Howard will be missed by many friends here in New Hampshire as well as Florida. He will also be greatly missed by his wife of 19 years, Glenda M. (Madden) Henderson of Keene and her family, her daughters, Robin Budd and her partner, Robert Hackler of Newfields, NH, Wendy Jones and her husband, David, of Flagstaff, AZ, Shannon Driscoll and her husband, Reginald Goodnow, of Westmoreland; his two sons, Keith Henderson and his wife, Donna, of Granger, Indiana, Kevin Henderson and his wife, Judy, of Granger; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members. Howard was predeceased by his first wife, Marian Henderson; a sister, Mary Underwood; and a brother-in-law, Sheridan “Jay” Underwood.
A celebration of Howard’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd from 3:00 to 5:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene. Words of remembrance and a prayer service will be held during this celebration of life at 4:30PM. Services and burial in the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery in South Bend, will be held at a later date.
