Julia M. Hardy,”Julie” 87 of Stoddard, NH passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, with her daughter at her side and the love of her husband and family surrounding her.
Born in Pittsburg, PA on May 30, 1930, to Edward and Minerva Magowan, she spent her childhood in Blairsville, PA , graduating from Blairsville High School in 1948. After high school she went on to attend Nursing school for one year, leaving after the sudden death of her Mother, to raise her then nine-year old sister.
In 1951 Julie and her friends went out with a few of the Air Force servicemen temporarily stationed in Blairsville and it was on this night that she met her life-long love: Robert Hardy. After several years of long-distance dating, the two decided to marry and on Tuesday, August 3, 1954 they were wed at the Blairsville Methodist Church.
The couple lived in Delaware until the end of Robert’s service and then moved to Keene. There Julie was happy to be a homemaker and raise their three children. She was proud to support her husband in his work with the Keene Police Department. As her children grew, she worked part-time for several businesses and became the first female crossing guard for the City of Keene and the Police Department. She also worked as a caregiver for the Lacey Family and finally found a place in the Cheshire Medical Family, where she worked as a Patient Transporter for many years.
She and Bob moved to Stoddard in the early 90’s to enjoy their retirement in the quiet little town. She enjoyed being able to see the wildlife, go fishing and working in her flower gardens. Above everything she loved being with her family, especially when she got to cook for them. Her specialties were spaghetti and fried dough, affectionately known as “gut bombs” to her family. She also enjoyed to travel and especially enjoyed trips to the ocean on the Maine Coast. When she wasn’t busy with all of these many activities she was content to sit back at home and watch NASCAR.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years: Robert Hardy of Stoddard, her daughter: Donna Lewis and her husband William of Hillsboro, her sons: David Hardy and his wife Nancy of West Swanzey and Robert Hardy and his wife Suzanne of Keene, 3 granddaughters, 6 grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, one great-grandson and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She is predeceased by her parents and her “baby-sister” Johanna.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 3pm at the Monadnock Covenant Church, 90 Base Hill Rd, Keene, NH. A Celebration of her life will be held at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St. Keene, NH on Monday, April 16, 2018 from 4 – 6pm.
