Born on August 30, 1930 he was 87.
A native of Switzerland, he grew up in Lausanne and graduated from Geneva Technicum in 1948 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Six years later, he arrived in the United States and took a manufacturing management job near Montreal where he met and married his first wife Royetta Ross. Over the next dozen years he worked there and in several US cities settling in Marlborough where he worked as an applications engineer for Kingsbury Corp traveling extensively and speaking several languages fluently.
He and his first wife built a home and raised their three children in Marlborough. Upon arriving in the Monadnock region he became a community leader serving on the Marlborough and School Administrative Unit 29 school boards for many years and was a chairman of both. He presided over the NH School Board Association for the Northeastern Region including the US Virgin Islands. Fred was a tireless advocate for people with physical and mental disabilities. Inspired by his own experiences and his daughter Sonya, he dedicated his life to making sure that the community could offer services and support to families in need of them. Fred was instrumental in bringing these services to the area serving for many years as a board member and supporter of Monadnock Developmental Services. He was a coach for the Special Olympics at national events and a member of the governance board and president. In 2015 he was recognized by Monadnock Developmental Services for his many decades of service to MDS. He received the agency’s very first Manfredo Torelli Family Advocacy award named in his honor and given annually.
In 1984 Fred’s first wife Royetta died unexpectedly. He then met and married his current wife Justine (Tina) Dwyer. He and Tina were married for 32 years. Together they continued to support MDS and their own families. Fred and Tina loved to travel the world including African safaris, time in Machu Picchu, and China. He also enjoyed woodworking, camping and spending time with family.
Besides his wife Tina, he is survived by two sons, Marc (Karen)Torelli of Huntington, VT, Blair (Michelle)Torelli of Hinsdale, MA , his beloved daughter Sonya of Keene, his stepdaughter Lesley(Jeff)Blecharczyk of Concord, and his grandchildren Grace, Ross, Jordan, Danni, and Gabby.
He was predeceased by his parents Berthe (Grangier) and Eugene Torelli.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, April 10,2018 at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court St. Keene, NH., from 4 to 6pm. Burial in the Meeting House Cemetery, Marlborough, NH will take place in the Spring and will be announced as the date draws closer.
