His parents, Miriam F. (Wheeler) and Ray Marshall Patmos, welcomed their son into the world on March 28, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio.
The family moved to Spofford, NH in 1956, when his father’s job transferred him to Keene, NH.
Marshall attended Chesterfield Elementary School through the 8th grade then graduated in 1962 from Keene High School. He was accepted into the Forestry Program at the University of NH, joining the Brothers of Alpha Tau Omega. Marshall graduated from UNH in 1966 with a Bachelor Degree in Forestry.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard’s Oceanographic Unit, where he was a marine science technician first class, and was stationed at the US Naval Yard in Washington, DC, and later on Governors Island, NY, where he attended Coast Guard Oceanography School. He was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in August of 1970.
In the summer of 1965, Marshall met his wife, Patricia "Pati" Sherman, while she was working at her family’s store, "Sherman’s" in Chesterfield. They were married in 1966 at St. James Episcopal Church in Keene, while Marshall was on leave from boot camp. The couple left for Lakehurst, NJ where Marshall attended Naval Weather School from November of 1966 until March of 1967.
In 1971, Marshall became the Assistant UNH Co-operative Extension Forester of Coos County, NH. A year later, he became the Coos County Extension Forester in Lancaster, NH, where he continued to work until 1981 when he transferred to Cheshire County.
In 1981, Marshall began a long career as the UNH Co-operative Extension Forester of Cheshire County, working with this group until his retirement in 2005. Over his 34 plus years as a County Forester, Marshall had numerous accomplishments, and served on multiple state, regional and national committees and organizations. He authored and co-authored numerous fact sheets, publications and books having to do with Christmas trees and woodland management, including pests and economic impact of managing woodlands.
During his working career, he continued his education, receiving a Master Degree in Business Administration from Plymouth State College in 1980.
Marshall also taught numerous workshops to private landowners and professional foresters, along with teaching in the CALL Program at Keene State College.
He was instrumental in starting a "Christmas Tree Pest Manager Course" offered to many in NH, VT, MA, ME, CT & RI, to educate and certify participants in the application of pesticides. This was an extensive 2-day course held at KSC.
Marshall and Pati have owned and operated Farmstead Acres in Westmoreland for 31 years, managing a Christmas tree plantation. With the help of family and friends, they ran a successful "cut your own" Christmas tree farm. The family will continue Marshall’s passion, this upcoming holiday season.
The family is grateful for all of the many cards and well-wishes they have received from friends and community following Marshall’s passing.
He truly will be greatly missed by many, especially his family, his wife of 56 years, Patricia "Pati" Patmos of Westmoreland; his oldest daughter, Kelly N.
