Born on May 13, 1951, in Vancouver, BC, Bruce spent his early years there before moving to Nelson, where he lived for 20 years. He later settled in the Okanagan, a place where he found meaningful connection and was proud to call home with is wife Heidi.
Bruce was a gentle and loving man whose quiet presence made others feel at ease. Alongside his quiet strength, Bruce also had a quirky sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. In spite of the fact that he has suffered Type 1 diabetes since childhood and had several heart attacks, he faithfully pursued a career and ministry path.
Bruce’s career reflected his compassionate spirit. He began as a steel fabricator before moving into social services, where he supported teens and adults with Down syndrome. He later owned and operated a driving training school and went on to become a driving examiner with Service BC, retiring in 2016.
He had a love for Jesus Christ and faithfully served in numerous ministries through the years within Summerland Alliance church. In retirement, his faith became a central part of his life. He may be mostly known for his ten years as the sound and PowerPoint tech for Sunday services. In affiliation with the church, he served in God’s Kitchen to feed the homeless and was Chaplain for the local chapter in the Christian Motorcycle Association. At home he was working his way through online Bible courses. He also loved singing worship songs while playing his guitar.
Bruce’s passion for motorbiking was as strong as his passion for sailing. He had a deep love for being out on the water, first with his houseboat and then on his sailboat. Bruce had a consistent desire to understand truth both biblically, and in the world around him. Daily he dug deep, separating fact from fiction in political matters, carrying a strong sense of justice.
Bruce is survived by his loving wife, Heidi Fidler and his older brother, Neil Fidler (Leslie); his daughters, Leannah and Anneke Fidler (Colin Mitchell), and their mother, Bonnie Nilsen; as well as his granddaughters, Juniper MacKay and Alexis Fidler.
He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Heidi, his family, his church community, his friends within the Christian Motorcycle Association and the Yacht club. Bruce leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humility, quiet strength, and a pursuit of truth.
