Chuck was predeceased by his brother Robert (Bob) in 2009. He will be lovingly re-membered by his sister-in-law Denise Joy, niece Janice Joy, nephew Rick Joy, and great-niece Samantha and great-nephew Taylor and by all those who were fortunate to know him as a true gentleman, educator and faithful friend.
He was always proud of his ancestral diversity, especially the Kanaka (Hawaiian) and Cowichan heritage and he became a discerning collector of local First Nations’ art and culture.
Chuck taught in several rural BC schools and after graduating from U.B.C. (B.A., M.Ed) he specialized in teaching the hearing-impaired a Jericho Hill School for the Deaf. He was selected to help initiate a pilot programme to integrate hearing impaired students into a regular curriculum at Kitsilano Secondary School. The programme was highly successful and a first for Western Canada.
From the mid 1970’s to mid 1990’s Chuck was a dedicated teacher/counsellor and sponsor of the Students’ Council at Killarney Secondary School in Vancouver. It was this dedication to his students, his selflessness, and positive approach to life that en-deared him to students and staff equally.
Over the last years Chuck faced some challenging health problems, which he endured with quiet resolve, never complaining. Chuck developed life-long friendships and it is those who remain that will bear the hardship of his passing. Rest in peace, dear friend.
