I am I and you are you; Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.”
Canon Henry Scott Holland
Dawn was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, March 18, 1964 to a hockey family (Father Geoffery Powis – who passed away in 2001 and mother Lorna (Miller). They were soon joined by sister Kimberley. After moving around the continent, they settled briefly in Cranbook. There, Dawn found her first great love, a horse she would call Buck. Horses would remain a passion of Dawn’s for her entire life.
In 1978, Dawn’s family moved to Kelowna. It was in Kelowna where fate brought together Dawn and Frank Filice, the other great love of her life (running neck and neck with various horses). They married in 1984. Today, their family includes daughters Chrissy, Lia (Kyle) and Lynnzi (Tyler), as well as grandchildren Cj, Mackenzie, Jada, Ben and Ryan.
In addition to horses, dogs, cats and other animals, a large extended family and many, many close friends, Dawn deeply treasured good haircuts, dirt roads, music, art, motorcycles and down-to-earth people. In return, she left us with her great gifts of courage, creativity, love, loyalty and authenticity. If there was one thought she would leave us with, it would be to “Cowboy up and get going!”
Dawn passed away on November 7, 2014 in Kelowna, BC. There will be a private celebration of Dawn’s life. The family asks that those wishing to honour Dawn’s memory do so with a gift to Hospice House. Also, if you can share a moment today with a loved one, do so and cherish it.
