Doreen Wierenga passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, at age 88, surrounded by family and a dear friend. Doreen’s kindness and deep love of nature touched everyone who knew her.
Born in Kent, UK, Doreen often spoke of the happy childhood she had with her parents Harry and Dorothy. She moved to Canada in the 1950s, where she met her beloved husband Lou in Hamilton, ON. They eventually settled in Kelowna in 1969 and were married for almost 60 years.
Doreen was a passionate naturalist and dedicated volunteer. She was active in the Kelowna Nordic Ski Club, Central Okanagan Naturalists’ Club, and Friends of Black Mountain Park. She lovingly maintained a bluebird trail near Black Mountain and found joy in birding, photography, cross-country skiing, camping, hiking and corresponding with friends and family.
Doreen is survived by Lou, children Julie (Bernard) and Paul (Shari), and grandchildren Kassandra (Michael), Ariana, Robbie, Andrew, and Miranda. Doreen's aunts, uncles and cousins around the world held a special place in her heart. She had many long lasting, dear friendships and treasured her neighbours. Her love of animals, card games, the colour blue, and good conversation will be fondly remembered.
The family would like to thank the Central Okanagan Hospice House staff for their excellent care. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sept 27 and please contact the family for details. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kelowna Nordic Ski Club Fundraiser:
