February 24,1924 to May 5, 2019
Dorothy ‘Billie’ passed away peacefully after a short illness in KGH on May 5, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband Laurence William Hack and her youngest daughter Jane Barbara Hack. Billie is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Hack, granddaughter Jenny Lynn Lester, grandson in-law Jake Lester and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy 'Billie' was born in Surrey, England on February 24, 1924, daughter to Ernest James & Dorothy May Overton, sister to Arthur 'Sonny', Fred, Mary, and Annie. In England Billie worked in the Post Office throughout WW 2, alongside her father. She met her husband Laurie at a Community Hall dance after the war and were married in 1950. They decided to immigrate to Montreal, Canada in 1955, one year after the birth of their first daughter Patricia.
Billie and family moved many times over the next 15 years following Laurie's career moves, living in Toronto Vancouver and San Francisco.
During this time their second daughter Jane was born and Billie worked for many years at Eaton's in Toronto and Vancouver.
Billie and family returned to BC in 1970 settling in West Vancouver where Billie became a much loved neighbor and friend to many. Billie was renowned for her love of nature and animals, from feeding the birds and foxes in her yard to rescuing a ‘pack’ of dogs throughout her years. Billie also had an affinity for gardening and landscaping and could often be heard saying ‘oh that’s a beautiful rock’ whilst trying to obtain a boulder for her garden ( this trait seems to run in the family). She could always be heard singing a tune from her early days, humming to operetta favorites or Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. Billie's extended family all lived in England. Billie and Laurie both felt drawn back to England and did return to there for their early retirement years, spending much of their time with Billie's family. Billie and Laurie returned to the mountains in their later retirement to be close to their two daughters and granddaughter, finally settling in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Billie’s three girls Patricia, Jane, and granddaughter Jenny were her pride and joy as Billie was to them. Billie was kind, gentle, caring but strong. She was always ready to ‘have a cup of tea and a chat’ whether to share some humorous stories, hear about your day or ‘ catch up on some juicy gossip’ with Jenny. Billie’s granddaughter now, fittingly refers Billie to an ‘earth angel’, she was a beautiful lady who was loved and admired by those who knew her. Once met never forgotten.
