Eleanor “Patricia” Weeks Bacon
My mother was the second child of Oscar and Euphemia Weeks. She was born March 9, 1929, in Nevis, Alberta, where her parents operated a general store. Her parents named her Eleanor but always called her a variation of her middle name Patricia. When she was little her dad nicknamed her “Katrinka” because, like the cartoon character, Mom was strong, determined and liked potatoes. Oscar used to tell Mom he had to plant extra potatoes just for her. Even at the end of her life, Mom still loved potatoes! When I was taking care of her, Mom informed me that I needed to make her more potatoes. 😊
After Nevis the family – now consisting of her parents, grandparents, older sister Gloria and younger brother Douglas – moved to Hondo to homestead. Mom had many fond memories of the years in Hondo: staying with her sister and grandparents during to winter to be closer to school, picking berries, visiting the Swedish neighbors (who always had pancakes for her – Mom used to put some in her pocket for later), neighbors coming to their house to listen to the radio and her mom making donuts, and the adventures with the family goat.
Next the family moved to Edmonton. By this time another sister Doreen was added to the family. My grandmother always had projects delegating the domestic duties to Mom – this included the care of Doreen. For the rest of their lives, Mom and Doreen had a special bond. Later a younger brother, Wylie, was born.
While in Edmonton, Mom met my father, Archie Henry Bacon – the love of her life. Dad had been in the service and was in Edmonton visiting his brother and family. They married August 24, 1946, when she was 17 and he was 22. Within a year their first child, Larry, was born in 1947. Followed by a daughter, Patricia Elaine in 1949. The family moved to British Columbia where Trudy (me) in 1954 and Micheal in 1958 where born.
Dad was in construction but was often out of work because of the rainy coastal weather. In 1964 the family moved to Ukiah, California. In Ukiah Dad became a contractor and all four of their children graduated from high school. Mom and Dad bought a 5th wheel to stay on job sites out of town and for traveling. Sometimes they joined Doug and Velma (Mom’s brother and his wife) in Arizona. One time they traveled to the Midwest where they visited many of the places from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories. These were good years for them. Dad died in 1983.
After Dad died, Mom ran a daycare for several years. One of the children she took care of was my son – Daniel. She had many wonderful memories of the children and their parents. She kept in touch with several of the families and look fondly at the albums with the children’s pictures.
After a few years, Mom moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, to be closer to her mother and family. During this time Mom met and married Max Kosmina. They were married for almost 21 years.
Mom loved the Lord and children. For many years she taught children in Sunday School. Later she was a Children’s Leader at Bible Study Fellowship. Mom was an avid reader. Every year she read the Bible from Genesis thru Revelations – alternating Bible versions. She was also an artist. She took classes at the local community college in drawing, water colors, oils, and ceramics. Each of her children are blessed to have one or more of her drawings or paintings. With her artist eye all Mom’s homes were always beautifully decorated. Mom was also a gardener – her yards were perfusion of colorful flowers. She liked sewing, swans and barns. Mom had a sense of humor til the end of her life. Mom had dementia the last few years. At the end she wasn’t sure if I was her daughter, her sister Gloria, or her Mother. But she did know that whoever I was that I would take care of her. I was blessed to be with her and enable her to live her final days and die in her home.
Mom is survived by her four children, two step-daughters, her grandchildren and step grandchildren, her brother (Wylie and his wife Dianne), her step-sister (Doris), and many nieces and nephew.
Mom was dearly loved by her family, friends and church members. I will miss her, but know that she in heaven with our Lord and that I’ll see her again one day.
