Ella May Angela McCollom, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed
away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at the age of 79, following a long and courageous battle with
COPD.
Born in Rainy River, Ontario in 1947, Ella lived a life filled with love, laughter, and family. She
found joy in life’s simple pleasures — sharing stories over coffee, spending time with family and
friends, enjoying games of bingo, and cheering from the stands while watching her grandsons
play hockey. Ella had a special love for ducks and cats and spent decades collecting treasured
keepsakes that reflected her warm spirit, caring nature, and unique personality. She also worked
for many years at Peoples Food Market throughout the 1970s and 1980s before retiring in the
early 1990s, where she became well known for her kindness and welcoming smile.
Ella was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Allan McCollom, in 2010, and by her mother,
Rita Wilde, in 2025.
She leaves behind her loving daughter, April Schweigert (Dean); her cherished grandsons,
Michael Marshall (Jen) and Jordan Schweigert; her brothers, Daniel King (Tammy) and George
King (Jayson); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose
lives were touched by her kindness and generosity.
Ella also remained close to Allan’s children — Alana, Nancy, Robert, Darcy, and Darelle — who
continued to hold a special place in her life over the years. Special thanks are extended to
Darelle, whose thoughtfulness and care never wavered after Allan’s passing. The flowers sent on
birthdays and every Mother’s Day meant more to Ella than words could express.
She will also be fondly remembered by Michelle Korchinski, who lived with the family as a
teenager and remained forever grateful for Ella’s love, guidance, and support over the years.
Ella is also lovingly remembered by her partner, Billy Bernier, whose companionship, care, and
compassion brought comfort and happiness to her later years. Appreciation is also extended to
Billy’s daughter, Rachael Bernier, for the care and support she provided to Ella during her final
months.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
in the common room at 303 Whitman Road.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends are invited to make a donation to the British Columbia
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) in honour of Ella’s lifelong love of
cats. For those wishing to bring flowers, carnations were Ella’s favourite.
Donations may be made at: BC SPCA
Ella will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
