Florence is predeceased by her son David (1989) and husband Gilbert (2020). She is also predeceased by her parents Laddie and Annie, as well as her sister Elaine Elizabeth (who deceased as an infant) and brothers Stanley and Leslie.
Florence was born in Stockholm, Saskatchewan. She was the oldest of four children and had to leave school in grade 8 to help with the homestead. While Florence worked on the family farm, she met her handsome husband Gilbert, as he was part of the crew that came to help clear the parcels of land. After they married on October 26, 1954, they settled on their own farm, where they started their family of 8 children. After selling the farm in 1972, they packed up all 8 children to make the journey to Kelowna, BC.
Once in Kelowna, they continued their hard work ethic and worked in orchards for many years, including everything from pruning to irrigation to picking apples and pears. She was very proud that in one season the family picked 10 railway cars of apples to purchase a ski boat that was used immensely. As Florence was an exceptional cook, she and Gilbert expanded her horizon and created Nagy Catering. She was very honored and proud, as it was also a family event. She constantly had people stop her on the street thanking her for the wonderful meal Nagy Catering had prepared for their event. Her cheesecake dessert had become a menu favorite!!!
Florence was also very involved in catering for the Catholic Church up until just before Covid (not bad for an 87-year-old woman). Florence was in charge of pretty much everything in regards to preparing and ordering of food for all the Church dances and New Years parties. She was a very integral part of the Church community. Florence was an active member of the Church as a member of the Catholic Women’s League and as a Eucharistic Minister.
It wasn’t all just work; there was also a lot of fun times. They bought the first of many family ski passes at Last Mountain in 1973 and later at Big White. This is something they had never dreamed about prior to moving to Kelowna. She was very proud of all her children and grandchildren in sports and any activities they wished to pursue. When Florence and Gilbert hung up their ski’s, they thoroughly enjoyed going to all the Senior’s dances in Kelowna. Their favourite dance was “The Old Time Waltz.”
Florence and Gilbert enjoyed taking trips. They cherished the visits they had with family and friends they knew and also seeked out long lost relatives that they had never met before. In 2004, they went on a four month journey across Canada and into the United States in their campervan.
Mom will be remembered for her never-ending supply of the great cooking and baking she always had on hand, no matter when you dropped in for a visit!
